David Charme, LCSW

Trauma-informed, somatic, and relational psychotherapy for adults and couples in New York City

Headshot of David Charme at Gather Therapy

I’m David Charme, a psychotherapist in New York City and the founder of Gather Therapy

I work with adults and couples seeking meaningful change in how they experience themselves and the people closest to them, including LGBTQ+ individuals and couples across all genders and sexual orientations.

What brings people to therapy often lives not only in thought, but in emotion, the body, and relationships. My focus is on helping those experiences become clearer and more workable so change can begin to take shape in everyday life.

How I Work

My work is relational, trauma-informed, and grounded in somatic therapy.

I draw from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT), and relational and attachment-focused therapy. These approaches allow us to work directly with experiences like developmental trauma, shame, and self-doubt.

What You Can Expect in Sessions

I’m engaged and active in sessions. We pay attention not only to what you say, but also to what unfolds emotionally, physically, and between us as we talk. These moments open the door for you to experience something new.

I also share observations and help track patterns as they emerge. We move at a pace that allows real contact with what matters without forcing intensity or staying at the surface.

Over time, clients often describe no longer feeling at the mercy of their same reactions – and being able to show up with more clarity, conviction, and choice.

“I don’t see people through a narrow lens. I live in a world of many colors and complexities, and that perspective shapes how I meet the people sitting across from me.”

A Bit About Me

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in a competitive, results-driven professional environment. Over time I realized that what mattered most to me was depth, connection, and attunement. That shift ultimately led me to this work and continues to shape how I approach it.

I don’t see people through a narrow lens. I live in a world of many colors and complexities, and that perspective shapes how I meet my clients. Clients often tell me they appreciate working with someone who can hold complexity while staying grounded and connected in the room.
